Australia's Leading Colourist Does A Master Class at Hair Traders

At the end of June all of the Hair Traders team were lucky enough to get face to face with Australia's leading hair colourist, Alyson Schoer.

This was the first of a series of hair colouring seminars Alyson is doing exclusively for Hair Traders where she will be teaching many of the new techniques seen in the current hair fashion magazines.

Meet Alyson Schoer, one of Australia’s leading hair colourists and educators.

For as long as she can remember, master hair colourist Alyson Schoer has been obsessed with hair. After leaving school and enrolling in a teaching degree Schoer soon realised it just wasn’t meant to be. “I wasn’t interested in the course, did badly and then my sister suggested I try hairdressing.” She got the first job she applied for with Robert Bowerman, who she credits with inspiring many Australian hairdressers with his then pioneering promotion of hair competitions.

A chance meeting with Renato Brunas, creator of Crazy Colors, a system of primary hair colours that launched the punk colour trend in Britain as used by the legendary Vidal Sassoon colourist Annie Humphreys, led Schoer to taking up the job as his American colour technician. “I was out on the road all over the States – Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi to New York. Schoer was soon approached to head up the colour department of Vidal Sassoon’s New York salon, which she did for five years.

“A great colourist can actually make a hair cut look better than it is and show the intricacy and the stylist’s skill,” explains Schoer.” Now, with thirty years' experience under her belt, Schoer is passionate about passing on her knowledge and skills to the industry. Her ‘colour coaching’ work includes classes come up to speed with the latest techniques and tricks.

One of Schoer’s longest lasting partnerships has been with Goldwell Australia as guest educator for 18 years. “I’m now one of their colour masters. I always say I am a talented and experienced hair colourist; I can create new techniques, I can get up on stage and teach, I can do corrective colour, anything. You could say I’m an expert but Goldwell colour products make me look like a genius.
